modern translations

Typewriters and heavy bilingual dictionaries are long past.

Modern translators cannot do without powerful computers, fast Internet connection, language corpora and, above all, without computer-aided translation (CAT) tools.

about cat tools

CAT Tools are sophisticated database systems that are built around the core concept of translation memories, a method of capturing, storing and reusing human translations.
During translation, these programs build linguistic databases that store all translated sentences, or segments, with their source language equivalents. If the translators then encounter the same or a similar sentence in the source document twice, the translation memory will propose previous translations. The translators can then accept, reject or edit these suggestions.
Usually, translation memories cooperate with databases of terminology for active terminology recognition.

the pros are obvious

- Translation consistency: one translation for multiple sentence occurrences
- Accurate terminology: if termbases are used
- Reduction of time: translators only have to translate one sentence once
- Reduction of costs: exact and fuzzy matches are charged with considerable
  discounts

systems we use

Different clients require different CAT tools. This is why we use a range of these extremely useful systems too, among them:
- SDL Trados 2007 SP2
- SDLX 2007 SP2
- StarTransit XV Professional
- Across
- WordFast
- QA Distiller (for automated translation quality assurance checks)

alignment

You can create a translation memory from your existing source and target-language documents by creating pairs of source sentences and their translations and exporting them to a translation memory afterwards. Although this process takes time, you can achieve huge savings on future translations.
And the translators in SMART Translations will be delighted to help you.
